—Senior officers in Nigeria Police Force have petitioned President Muhammadu Buhari and the National Assembly, NASS, over non-payment of promotion dues, death allowances and pension arrears, despite efforts made to get them paid.
This came as the Budget Office wrote Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs, to produce comprehensive details of arrears for government’s action .
Towards this end, a circular with reference number BD/2000/EXP/Shortfall 2016, requesting for comprehensive list of arrears, has been sent from the Budget Office to all ministries for prompt response.
Indications to this effect came out following Vanguard, investigation of some of the petitions which showed that for years, thousands of workers in the civil service, foreign service and other parastatals, including security agencies, had been denied either their legitimate retirement benefits or pension arrears.
“The amount involved is said to be in several billions of naira but in the anti-corruption drive of the present administration, efforts will be made to ensure the monies owed the workers are genuine and not padded,” a source said.
Petitioners
The petitioners said: “It has never happened in history that arrears of promotion in an organisation exceed one calendar year. There are usually no carry over to another year as budget for the next year usually capture indebtedness of the past year.
“The promotions in the Police force have become mere decoration rather than remuneration."
